Mobile Defence – The Lookout Proposition

Mobile Defence – The Lookout Proposition

The mobile debate in business is over, and the use of smartphones and tablets to deliver increased productivity for all workers is now standard practice. One of the most important uses for the mobile devices that we all carry is access to messaging via email and other messaging services.

The biggest threat to your enterprise data is in your hand. With the increased use of mobile devices for email, comes an increased risk of sensitive data loss and a need for security improvements and monitoring. Visualising and minimising the risk associated with mobile devices is precisely what Lookout Mobile Threat Defence  (MTD) delivers. Lookout’s solution builds on the experience learned by monitoring and securing over 170 million devices to drive a flexible machine learning based MTD solution. One that can visualise the complete risk landscape, apply policies to counter the risks, detect emerging threats and counter them, while also integrating into any existing enterprise security and mobile management solutions that are in place. Lookout works on both Android and iOS platforms and enhances security on both by addressing the common vulnerabilities they share, and those unique to each of the platforms.

Renaissance is proud to partner with Lookout to deliver the Lookout Mobile Threat Defence and other Lookout Solutions within our markets. Contact us today to find out more or read on for a high-level overview of the Lookout Mobile Threat Defence  solution.

Protection from Risks on Devices

The number of mobile devices that are in use makes them a tempting target for cybercriminals looking to exploit such a significant threat surface. The way they do this is via vulnerabilities on devices, but also via apps that users are running on their mobile devices. Lookout uses a smart app analysis engine that has knowledge of app deployments on over 70 million iOS and Android devices to search for and highlight risks like:

  • Trojan or spyware that infects mobile devices
  • Vulnerabilities in-app data transfer or storage
  • Compliance threats due to risky app behaviour
  • Checking for side-loaded app installs that bypass corporate rules or official app stores

To detect atypical behaviour on the core device OS and hardware, Lookout creates a fingerprint for each monitored device and checks this against the 170 million devices previously scanned to highlight anything out of the ordinary that might need investigating. Such as:

  • Behavioural anomalies
  • Advanced root access or jailbreak
  • Out-of-date operating systems
  • Device configuration risks

Protection from Network-Based Risks

Beyond the device and the apps it is running, threats also come from the networks that are being used. For example man-in-the-middle attacks using spoofed Wifi hotspots to intercept and decrypt traffic to and from the devices. Lookout analyses network connection using data from a global sensor network to mitigate network attacks such as:

  • Man-in-the-middle attacks
  • Host certificate hijacking
  • SSL Strip attacks
  • TLS protocol downgrades

In addition to the network-related risks outlined above, protection from web-based phishing attacks directed at mobile users can be provided with the Lookout phishing and content protection solution. This is an add-on that works seamlessly with Lookout Mobile Threat Defence.

Protection for Corporate Data

The data is the most important thing to keep secure on mobile devices. The Lookout system allows access to corporate data using a system of zero trust in order to protect data. The Lookout Continuous Conditional Access system works in the background to monitor the state of the device and blocks access if any irregularity is found. Additionally, it only allows fully trusted devices to connect to corporate services and to access enterprise infrastructure and data. Anything that is detected by Lookout will revoke access from that device immediately. This protects against all of the following:

  • Lack of compliance with set policies
  • A device, apps, network, or firmware identified as risky by Lookout Security Cloud
  • Other risks from apps accessing and sharing regulated content – as defined in the system

Conclusion

In the era of GDPR, it is essential to protect sensitive data. Mobile working is now the norm for many knowledge and other workers. So it is vital that they have access to the data they need on their mobile devices when they need it, and that it is secured against accidental loss or malicious attack from cybercriminals. Lookout Mobile Threat Defence will allow you to deliver security to your users and their mobile devices. Contact Renaissance to find out more.
