BUILDING A GREAT BUSINESS CONTINUITY TEAM

BUILDING A GREAT BUSINESS CONTINUITY TEAM

In today’s blog I want to talk about the team, after all the team is the foundation of any business, they understand the workings of the business and they understand the realities of what it takes to keep the company running. Some members of your team probably know more about your business “operationally” than you do.

In a crisis you need your team to be on board and ready to go if things go wrong. So they need to be fully aware of their role and responsibilities if such an event happens…

Generic skills and capabilities needed:

  • Understanding the way your business works – to identify mitigation options and assess risks
  • Understand their contribution
  • Knowledge of time-critical activities / dependencies
  • Understand objectives and the benefits of your Business Continuity plan
  • Review their roles and responsibilities
  • Credibility and authority to promote the Business Continuity plan across the business

Roles & Responsibilities – Assigning

The Business Continuity Manager:

Key to setting-up and maintaining the Business Continuity Plan system, making decisions that need to be made and also managing the team.

  • Strategic Decisions & involving senior staff
  • Overseeing the Business Continuity process, including budget, resource and time allocation as required

The Recovery Team:

The people engaged following an incident, recovering key dependencies.

  • Develop plans, co-ordinate and deliver recovery plans
  • Recover parts of the assigned business, record progress, ensure the business recovers enough to remain functioning

Area Champions:

Work in named areas of the business to support and maintain their onward operations.

  • Support the Business Continuity culture, Identify and evaluate risks
  • Collate data and contacts, represent their area, supporting the recovery team and wider business

Watch out for:

  • Are there too many people involved in the planning stage?
  • Does everyone know their specific roles and are they able to prioritise time for the Business Continuity plan in their normal work schedules?
  • Is anyone resisting change or not fully on board?
  • Has training been given to those delegated to the Business Continuity plan?

best of luck and happy planning!
