Fatigue

Fatigue

How does the cyber security industry get its message across?

Regardless of whether it’s charity, donor or compassion there is a constant risk of audience fatigue.

US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently released a report which found that people are beginning to recoil from the constant bombardment of “cyber advice”

This highlights a great challenge for us as an industry. The task is to get our message across in a way that resonates with an audience.

Thing is, there is an attitude of ‘It’ll never happen to me’, which makes it difficult to communicate to an audience which has never experienced a security incident. Add to this, the fact that every piece of advice requires some sort of action or expense on the part of the listener, which is never a great start.

However, there is hope!

Let’s just take a step back a minute and look at the human factors in all of this and perhaps we can find a better way to get our message across.

• Tell a story- This is a great way to create chemistry with people and a great anecdote hooks people.

• Appeal to the human side- Take people on an emotional journey.

• Make it stick- Make your message memorable.

• Inspire- Give people a reason to want to act.

We have so many resources available to us now-a-days that can make our stories compelling that we really have no excuse. Take out the dry, flat advice and add in some creativity. Share real stories and incidents with people and in different ways through different forms of media!

We all need to continue doing our part and keep people safer through insights and education, but we need to make our message stick in the minds of our audience and not discourage them.
