Here goes… from earliest man we have tried to find ways to store and preserve information. In today’s technological age when people hear the words ‘storage’ or ‘computer storage’ they normally think about USB, NAS or SAN’s. Technology such as the floppy disk or even the punch card are nearly forgotten. If we look even further back to pre-historic early man they were using ochre and charcoal to paint information about their life on rock walls and caves!
Fast forward to ancient Egypt, papyrus (an early form of paper) was used to store information, the Chinese wrote documents on bamboo before developing paper.
In medieval England, they developed a system of tally, using tally sticks, widely used as a mnemonic device of the Exchequer for the collection of taxes by local sheriffs.
The Incas had their own memory aid which was the Quipu and consisted of knots but things really took a leap forward in 1440 AD with the invention of printing by Gutenberg which represented a real a milestone in the history of information storage.
As technology advanced, there was a need for some kind aid to read the information e.g. punch card, punched tape, magnetic tape, magnetic drum, and so on.
When in 1956 IBM invented the hard disk (5 MB) it was the catalyst for change at an unbelievable rate. One of these technologies was the first memory disk, or floppy disk, invented by Alan Shugart at IBM in 1971. This revolutionised data transportation from one computer to another.
From the 80’s to the 00’s two new techniques of digital data storing were introduced.
1. Electronic Devices: Memory sticks for example, very small but large amounts of storage (for its time)
2. Optical devices: the CD and the CD-ROM were released, in the middle of the 1990s these and several other optical devices started to get increasingly important and nowadays they are widely used.
The 21st century saw the advent of more and more capacity based on mechanical disk drives and more recently solid state drives. The seemingly unquenchable thirst for data is being matched by technology and capacity to match.
