The latest PKI and IoT study surveyed over 2,500 IT professionals in 17 countries – ranging from CISOs and CIOs to IT security managers – on their organisation's PKI practices, applications, and pain points. The findings show that the top challenges for deploying and managing PKI remain constant: no clear ownership, insufficient resources, and insufficient skills.

  • 64% of survey respondents said that the ever-changing digital landscape meant that they had insufficient resources to ensure comprehensive PKI use covering new infrastructure.
  • 52% of respondents cited skills shortages in PKI as a problem.
  • 52% also said there was no clarity on who managed PKI certificates across their organisations.
  • A third of those surveys said IoT and other new machine identities on the network posed a challenge to their PKI use.
  • Almost half of the IT leaders surveyed reported needing PKI that works across the cloud and private data centres.
  • Over a third reported adopting hardware security modules (HSMs) as the core of their PKI management strategy.
