EVERY LITTLE HELPS- LOOKING BACK TO 1987

GOING TRULY GLOBAL - LOOKING BACK TO 1987

"Across the Great Wall we can reach every corner in the world”

After a failed attempt on the 14th, on the 20th September 1987 the message above was sent via email by scholars at China’s Computer Application Technology Institute. A historic moment in China’s technological timeline!

From 1983 to 1987 Chinese and German teams collaborated and prepared the email to be sent from China to Germany. The CSNET node in China was fully integrated into CSNET and via CSNET to the rest of the e-mail world. With this first Chinese email, a major step was taken for the Chinese people communicate with the rest of the world.

Fast forward 30 years and China is considered as one of 6 global superpowers (Brazil, China, EU, India, Russia, USA) with a hugely significant role to play in the global economy. See some interesting facts below…

  • The Chinese internet market expanded 6.2% in 2016, gaining 43 million internet users - equivalent to the population of Ukraine or Argentina (China Tech)
  • China has approximately 710 million internet users, already more than the US and Europe combined, (EY)
  • 5% of users go online via connected devices, driven by the development of ‘Smart City’ and ‘Wireless City’ public access wireless networks in China’s major cities. (EY)
  • GDP growth has averaged nearly 10% a year, the fastest sustained expansion by a major economy in history which has lifted more than 800 million people out of poverty. (The World Bank)

Since the beginning of modern civilisation, people have been developing new technologies and improving existing ones to find new ways of completing the same tasks but more efficiently. The progression of new technologies has opened opportunities for businesses to communicate and trade with the four corners of the world. However, keeping up with new technologies can be a hefty task. The question must be asked, what if that first email was never sent in 1987? There is always a starting place and from then momentum is gained.

This got me thinking, if we aren’t seen to be pushing forward and embracing technological change, we either fall behind, become irrelevant in the industries in which we operate or miss out on opportunities. With an ever-connected world and the ‘need’ to be connected (and ‘global’) Renaissance customers already avail of these global solutions, locally.
